Learn to Trim Your Own Horse

Available in 3-month prepaid packages, renewed as needed (service area restrictions apply)

There is nothing I like more than empowering horse owners to learn and develop the skill to manage the trimming and care of their own horse’s hooves! While learning to trim hooves takes time and ongoing education, it can be safely done by anyone who possesses the motivation and determination to learn it. Generally, in 18 months to 2 years you can be managing the full hoof health care of your horse or horses on your own.  If you already have some degree of trimming experience or a natural talent for the skill you may reach the goal sooner. Even if it takes you longer, that’s OK too.

When you learn to trim your own horse’s hooves not only do you end your dependence on the mercy of your trimmer’s schedule and availability, but you open the door to a deeper relationship with your horse and a new level of self-confidence.

Whether you have one horse or several,  this learn-as-we-go program utilizes  routine trimming appointments as one-on-one education and coaching sessions. Specific homework is given at each session.  Based on the results of the trimming homework that you do during each trimming interval I advance you to the next step when I see you are ready.  The way the hooves look tells me how you’re doing.  There is no rush or deadline for achievement.

Along the way I help you with your body positioning and tool handling

Additionally, I provide you with written materials, worksheets and links to resources for you to study independently. I am available to you during the interval to answer questions or evaluate hoof photos.

Services
Hoof Care Services and Education

It is a privilege to serve horses by providing quality bare hoof trimming as part of the whole horse health care that is the responsibility of every horse owner. My approach begins from the horse’s perspective. Using anatomical and behavioral knowledge of horses I meet the animal where he or she is physically and emotionally to create a positive experience for the hoof trimming procedure. Working with the owner we meet the hoof health needs of the horse without force or punishment.

It is important to me that my human clients understand what I’m doing and why so that they may feel comfortable and confident with our working relationship.  At the first trim a hoof evaluation is done and a strategy for rehabilitation or maintenance is outlined.  If remedial treatments for frog health are necessary or other management factors need adjustment in order to improve hoof health it must be understood by the owner that these are his or her responsibility.  Trimming alone does not make sound and healthy hooves.

Basic Hoof Care Service

Horses will be maintained on a 4- week* trimming interval at the base rate for your location. Appointments are scheduled in advance with reasonable flexibility to account for life. Longer intervals between trims at the base rate may be discussed after a minimum period of 3 months from the initial trim at 4-week intervals.  The hooves themselves will prove if the living environment and regular movement of the horse provides a level of self-trimming sufficient to support a longer interval between trims with tools.

*in some months the interval will fall at 5 weeks to accommodate the calendar

Short Interval Trimming

Occasionally, the basic 4- week interval is still too long in certain cases, such as during laminitis, founder or other cases requiring remediation where the growth at four weeks inhibits proper healing and rehabilitation. Intervals of two or three weeks may be prescribed.  The base rate for your location will apply to each trim.  Keep in mind these more frequent trims are usually temporary.

However, if  two or three week trim intervals are recommended for the long term in order to provide healthy support for chronic conditions,  you might be a good candidate for my Learn to Trim Your Own Horse program.
